Your skis were ready. Your legs… not so much.
First run:
“Wow. I missed this.”
Second run:
“This feels great.”
A few runs later:
“Why are my legs so tired?”
And somewhere before lunch, you probably remembered something you had conveniently forgotten since the previous ski season:
Skiing is hard work. 🎿
Maybe you spent the summer walking, cycling, golfing, playing pickleball or simply staying active.
That’s all good.
But none of it guarantees that your legs are ready for several hours of repeated turns, absorbing terrain, controlling your speed and getting you back onto the chairlift for another run.
Ski fitness is specific.
The Problem Isn’t Your First Run
Your first run probably feels pretty good.
It’s what happens after the first few runs that tells the story.
Your thighs start to burn.
Your movements aren’t quite as crisp.
You start looking for a reason to take a break.
And suddenly that easy blue run doesn’t seem quite as easy anymore.
That’s fatigue talking.
And fatigue is exactly why preparing before ski season matters.
This Year Could Be Different
Imagine getting to the mountain and discovering that your legs aren’t spending the first day trying to remember what skiing feels like.
Instead, they’re ready for it.
You still get tired. You’re skiing, after all.
But you’re not starting from scratch.
You’ve already worked on the strength, endurance, balance, stability and mobility that skiing demands.
You Still Have Time
If you’re reading this in early October, the ski season may still be weeks away.
That’s not a reason to wait.
It’s an opportunity.
Start now and give your body time to prepare gradually.
You don’t need to train like an Olympic skier. You simply need to stop treating the first day on the mountain as the first day of your preparation.
