Why strength, stability and mobility may be the missing pieces in your running training.
You’ve been running consistently. Your mileage is respectable. Your cardiovascular fitness feels pretty good.
So why does improving seem to require adding another mile, another run, or another hard workout?
Because running isn’t only an endurance activity.
Every stride asks your muscles and connective tissues to absorb force, stabilize your body, produce force and repeat that process thousands of times.
Sometimes the missing piece isn’t more running. It’s more strength.
Running Fitness Is More Than Cardiovascular Fitness
We tend to think of running in terms of:
- mileage
- pace
- heart rate
- VO2 max
- endurance
Those things matter.
But running also depends on your ability to control and produce force repeatedly.
Your calves and feet help absorb and return energy. Your quads and glutes help control landing and generate propulsion. Your hips help stabilize your pelvis and control your leg. Your core helps transfer force between your upper and lower body.
If those systems fatigue before your cardiovascular system does, your run can deteriorate even though your lungs still feel capable.
Strength Can Make Each Stride More Efficient
This is where the idea of running economy becomes interesting.
Running economy is essentially how much oxygen and energy you use to maintain a given running speed.
Research has found that appropriately designed strength training can improve running economy in endurance runners.
That doesn’t mean strength training magically makes someone faster.
It means that you may become better at producing and controlling the forces required for running without increasing the amount of running you do.
That’s a pretty attractive proposition for the recreational runner.
Strong Legs Aren’t Just About Bigger Muscles
This is an important distinction.
The goal isn’t to turn runners into bodybuilders. It’s to develop useful strength.
That means exercises such as:
- split squats
- step-ups
- lunges
- Romanian deadlifts
- calf raises
- single-leg exercises
- controlled squats
These movements challenge the muscles responsible for producing and controlling the forces involved in running.
And single-leg work is particularly relevant because running is essentially a series of single-leg actions.
Don’t Forget the Hips and Core
A runner can have strong quads and still have weaknesses elsewhere.
The hips need to control the position of the pelvis and leg. The glutes contribute to hip extension and stability. The core helps maintain control as forces move through the body.
This is one reason a good runner-strength program shouldn’t consist entirely of squats and calf raises.
You want a body that can control movement, not simply produce force.
Strength Isn’t a Replacement for Running
This needs to be very clear.
Stop running and start lifting weights.
I’m not suggesting that. Running remains the sport-specific training. Strength training is the supporting cast.
The question is whether some runners would benefit more from replacing a little of their endless pursuit of additional mileage with better-rounded training.
Research generally supports combining strength work with endurance training rather than treating the two as competing activities.
And the American College of Sports Medicine’s 2026 resistance-training guidance emphasizes a useful point for recreational athletes: consistency matters enormously, while complicated programs aren’t necessarily required.
What About Injury Prevention?
Here’s where we need to be careful.
We shouldn’t promise that strength training will prevent running injuries. The research is more complicated than that.
Exercise-based injury-prevention programs don’t provide a simple, one-size-fits-all answer for endurance runners.
But there’s still a sensible argument for developing the physical qualities that running demands.
A stronger runner may have more capacity to handle training load.
Think of strength as building a bigger buffer, not an insurance policy.
Strength training can be one part of a well-rounded approach to running, but it isn’t a guarantee against injury.
You Don’t Need a Bodybuilding Program
This is where things get practical.
For a recreational runner, two short strength sessions per week can be a realistic way to make strength training a meaningful part of an overall program.
A simple session might include:
Lower body
- squat or split squat
- step-up or lunge
- Romanian deadlift
Lower leg
- calf raises
- single-leg calf raises
Core and stability
- plank variation
- single-leg balance or control exercise
You don’t need a giant gym, complicated equipment or a six-day training schedule.
The objective is to consistently train the physical qualities that running doesn’t fully develop.
The Goal Isn’t to Run More. It’s to Become a Better Runner.
Adding mileage is one way to improve. But it isn’t the only way.
You can improve the engine through running.
You can improve the chassis through strength and stability.
You can improve movement quality through mobility.
And you can improve your ability to recover by managing training load intelligently.
Put those pieces together and you’re no longer simply accumulating miles.
You’re building a more capable runner.
